Why were there some Iraqis that fought the Americans in Afghanistan when they c oud've just foughtin Iraq?

After Al-Qaeda in Iraq was all but decimated Afghanistan was one of the few places that they could flee to safety. You also have to remember that there were a fairly large number of them that went from Afghanistan to Iraq after it kicked off because they had been run out of Kabul.
