What is basaltic lava?

Basalt is formed from lava cooling rapidly on the Earth's surface, including the ocean floor, where most of it forms at mid-ocean ridges. It's the lava that flows from those boundaries that causes spreading of the ocean floor. The lava is created by decompression melting of the mantle.
